Where is the LOVE?

Love is a word with a lot of different meanings. Alas, that should be known - but nowadays, most people seem to think it's just a synonym for wanting to screw each other. For shame! As it should be noted, I am a sucker for romance... and let's say most Rare games have a lot of it. However, let's start with the usual.... lovey-dovey romance stuff.

Alright, first things first, we'll start with Conker. Conker and Berri are officially and canonically boyfriend and girlfriend. However, we never really saw 'em actually being kind to each other.... save for a throwaway line by Conker that was mostly to get himself out of a jam. However, they make an unlikely couple for sure. I mean, Conker is a normal red squirrel, and Berri is a chipmunk with dyed fur. And she's about thrice as tall as her boyfriend. I don't wanna know how those two.... ahem, have their business. Considering the game is rated M however, it's rather strange they didn't do so... I mean, really.

Alas, moving on! Let's go to the DK crew. As early as the first Donkey Kong Country, a girl by the name of Candy Kong was called DK's love interest. However, apart from the cartoons they didn't acknowledge each other as an item. And as today I still think that Candy takes more of a liking towards Funky as opposed to DK. However, in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest we got introduced to Dixie Kong, Diddy's supposed girlfriend. They didn't really act very lovey-dovey either, but the love somehow was there. Mostly in fan-art, though..

Banjo-Kazooie wasn't about rescuing the main character's girlfriend... instead, his sister. Some people may argue that Banjo and Kazooie love each other in a romantic way, but I still don't know if it's platonic or romantic.

And as for Fox and Krystal... Welp, I haven't really got far enough in Star Fox Adventures... still haven't! So I don't know how they feel about each other. However, I somehow picture them having an Avatar-like relationship with each other later on, what with Krystal living on Dinosaur Planet, teehee.

And now for something completely different - platonic friendships! I'll be discussing Donkey Kong Country Returns' ending as well, so beware of spoilers!

Personally, if two characters are like totally best friends forever that'll do anything to protect each other... my little fangirl-heart melts. I don't know why, it may be 'cuz I'm a girl and Most Fan Fic Writers are Girls. You may know about Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong alright, especially in Donkey Kong Country Returns they seem to have a special bond with each other. I've said it before, but I'll say it again - if one manages to beat the game with just Diddy is still one of the cutest things I've ever seen. Ever.

All together now.... d'aaaaaw. This really makes up for no Kremlings, you know.

One of the reasons while I find Retro to handle the DKC series perfectly. Only thing that's missing now... I think you know.

It's scaly, wears a crown, and has a few dozen sharp teeth. King K. Rool. However, awesome as the Kremling King may be, he has little relevance to this topic. For shame. However, two of his underlings, as a matter of fact...

Klump and Krusha. While most people just see them as random bad guys just there to be bad, they actually have a heart. While that may just be my little fangirl-side taking over, there are times where they're shown to genuinely care about each other. And they're bad guys. Think about that for a while.

Message in a Bottle Show was a pretty lame episode, but this.... awww... As K. Rool said afterwards; "Keep your dignity, soldier!"

Actually, those two, as well as King K. Rool's personality, are the only things from the TV show that I carried over to be part of the game series' canon-fanon-canon. Because it makes sense in a way and those bad guys deserve to be more than a bunch of mooks who are doomed to be stomped upon.

However, as far as all those different kinds of affection go, be it between good guys or bad guys, it never occurs a lot. Which is plausible, because I doubt anyone will keep hugging/kissing/somethingelse somebody else all day long. It has to be kept realistic. However, sometimes, I can't tell the difference between platonic love and romantic love in my art. Which also occurs to the thousands of slash-fangirls over at FanFiction.net and DeviantART. And it's rather bothersome when people add a sweet, platonic image of two guys who just are comforting each other, to a favourite-map named "Slash and Yaoi" or some other silly Anime pseudonym. How very bothersome. This happened to me in the past, multiple times. For shame.

I'm still hoping that Retro or Paon, whichever will come with a new DK game, will have at least a bit of affection between some characters, be it platonic or not. Because.

With that, I bid you adieu. No art? Oh well. I didn't feel like it. It would take away from the whole point of this thing. Images are copyrighted to Nintendo and Nelvana.

  1. Hey, you know I totally agree with you on this topic. While I'm a sucker for romance, I love exploring all different kinds of loving relationships. To assume that every kind of affection stems from sexuality is to simplify the unfathomable complexity that is love.

I'll admit that for a while I thought it would be cute if Banjo and Kazooie were in LURVE, but later I realized - that's, eh, kinda weird, and moreover, what makes that a superior relationship to the intense bond of friendship that we know them already to have? Why complicate things?

Since you were talking about Klump and Krusha, and how they deserve to be more than just unknown enemies destined for a pounding: I agree, and their personalities and centrality to K. Rool are the only thing I've held over from the TV show into the rest of the canon. Also, I find that villains - despite being bad, supposedly - are often a great source of affection among each other, perhaps because they bond over being outcasts or their shared goals and hardships? My favorite example of this is ever Super Paper Mario, but I'm also using that idea to develop an original concept of my own...
